Leading Europe towards sport

Sport and Citizenship actively supports the promotion of sports policies at European level. The think tank’s priorities are in line with those set out in the European Union’s new work plan for sport, adopted in May 2024 for the next three years, and are consistent with many of the objectives set by European Commissioner Glenn Micaleff in his roadmap presented to the European Parliament in November 2024.

Since 2007, Sport and Citizenship has led or partnered in more than twenty projects supported by Erasmus+, a programme funded by the European Commission. These projects offer Sport and Citizenship the opportunity to analyse social issues and make recommendations to sports institutions and governing bodies, thereby helping to strengthen the place of sport in our society.

Ongoing European projects

Refugee PLAY United is a project that uses sport to help young refugees integrate into Italian communities by tackling the barriers they face in accessing sporting activities and connecting with local young people in a context of increasing migration.

Planet Ball trains young people to become ambassadors for environmentally friendly behaviour, raises awareness of the ecological impact of sport, develops tools for football clubs/federations, and organises events to promote eco-responsible practices among young players.

Safe helps women who have survived sexual violence by using fencing as a means of healing, building self-confidence and empowerment. The project aims to develop a European model for therapeutic sports workshops, providing innovative tools to support recovery.

ExerSafe is a 24-month project that helps make sports spaces safer and more welcoming for women. It identifies women’s needs, trains sports professionals to prevent harassment, and develops simple guidelines to create gender-equal environments. The project also organises mixed sports and learning sessions to boost women’s confidence and tests all these actions in real clubs and fitness centres.

SHIA (Sports & Health Innovation Accelerator) is a transnational initiative aimed at promoting innovation at the intersection of sport and health. SHIA establishes a structured framework that combines educational methodologies, research, ecosystem development and practical acceleration initiatives.

The Sport-UP project, led by 135 BPM, CMQe Sport and Sport & Citizenship, aims to strengthen the skills of local authority staff working in sport and youth. Building on the legacy of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and aligned with the European Skills Agenda, the project provides tailored training to help public agents become drivers of change and promote a more active and inclusive Europe.

WHEEL develops European cycling workshops for women who have experienced gender-based violence. The project uses cycling to help women rebuild confidence, regain control of their lives, and move beyond a victim identity. It also trains instructors to run safe, adapted sessions and provides guidelines to raise awareness of the role of sport in supporting survivors.
