Job Vacancy – European Affairs Manager

About us

Sport et Citoyenneté is a think tank whose mission is to strengthen the role of sport in society. Since its creation in 2007, Sport et Citoyenneté has been studying the societal impact of sport and contributing to public debate at national and European level through five key initiatives:

  • Coordinating networks (scientific committee, thematic networks).
  • Producing editorial content (quarterly journal, website, newsletters, social media).
  • Organising events (conferences, round tables, participatory workshops).
  • Project management (studies, reports, social impact analyses, European collaborative projects).
  • Advocacy work and support for stakeholders (government departments, local authorities, sports and voluntary sector organisations, economic actors) to integrate societal issues into their activities.

Key responsibilities

Working closely with the association’s management, you will ensure the implementation of the European policies and objectives defined by the association’s governing bodies.

You will be responsible for the design, management and delivery of the European collaborative projects entrusted to you. You will participate in defining and implementing the European advocacy strategy. Finally, you will coordinate the work of the office and the two project managers working alongside you.

Details of the role

Collaborative projects

  • Coordinate a European collaborative project (administrative and financial monitoring, implementation of the work programme, development and implementation of management tools necessary for project management, production of deliverables, organisation of working meetings and key project activities, liaison with European institutions).
  • Participate in collaborative projects (European, national) in which the think tank is involved as a partner (monitoring of tasks, participation in working meetings, adherence to the schedule).
  • Coordinate the design, drafting and submission of new collaborative projects (monitoring calls for proposals, attending information meetings on project submissions, identifying new opportunities for collaboration, drafting project briefs, developing partnerships, etc.).
  • Drawing up and monitoring the budget for the Think Tank’s European projects in conjunction with the association’s finance manager.

Advocacy

  • Drive and monitor the implementation of the advocacy strategy at European level (monitoring, drafting background and opportunity briefs, position papers, public relations, etc.).
  • Produce editorial content on specific areas related to European sports policy.
  • Represent the Think Tank at public events.
  • Defend, develop and promote the vision of sport set out in the Think Tank’s mission statement.

Coordination and management

  • Coordinate the activities of the European Affairs Office (allocation and monitoring of tasks, management of attendance schedules, quality control of work, participation in recruitment , induction of staff/trainees, compliance with procedures and processes, chairing departmental meetings).
  • Act as a liaison between the board and management and ensure the implementation of the Think Tank’s mission statement.
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie by driving a dynamic approach to work. Uphold professional secrecy and confidentiality.
  • Manage the administrative and logistical aspects of the Brussels office (purchasing, orders and maintenance)

Required profile

At least three years’ successful professional experience relevant to the tasks described above

You have previously coordinated several European projects in the sports sector and are well-versed in project management. You are meticulous and demonstrate an ability to bring together a variety of stakeholders, as well as to maintain a network of European partners.

You have a good understanding of European institutions and European funding programmes. Your higher education (Law, European Affairs, Political Science) and your proven passion for sport have enabled you to develop a sound understanding of current societal issues. In this regard, you have the ability to define and implement an advocacy strategy.

You demonstrate excellent writing skills, as well as the ability to listen and synthesise information, enabling you to carry out your tasks in line with the commitments made. You are capable of leading and managing a small team, and possess strong administrative and financial management skills.

You place particular importance on meeting deadlines and the quality of the work delivered. You are fully comfortable using English in your day-to-day work, both in writing and speaking, in formal and informal contexts.

Terms

  • Contract type: Permanent contract
  • Belgian labour law applies
  • Salary: depending on experience
  • Working hours: 38 flexible hours from Monday to Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work, depending on events.
  • Location: position based in Brussels (Belgium). Frequent travel abroad as part of collaborative projects. Remote working 1 day per week.

Main Missions

Working closely with the Head of European Affairs, you will assist in the design, coordination, and implementation of the organisation’s projects. You will contribute to promoting the vision of sport embedded in the Think Tank’s mission by supporting projects with a strong social impact in collaboration with various partners.

As part of your responsibilities, you will:

  1. Assist the three Project Managers in implementing European collaborative projects under their supervision (organising meetings and key project activities, liaising with EU institutions and partners, handling communication). These projects focus on environmental education and sustainable development (OSES and Planet Ball) as well as the inclusion of refugees through sport (PLAYER).
  2. Contribute to the design, drafting, and submission of new collaborative projects (monitoring calls for proposals, attending information sessions, identifying new partnership opportunities, drafting concept notes, developing partnerships, etc.).
  3. Conduct thematic monitoring on social issues in sport and contribute to editorial production (press articles, background notes, benchmarking reports, etc.).
  4. Assist in organising events (conferences, round tables, workshops) by helping define the editorial approach and identifying and contacting speakers.

Candidate Profile

Your higher education background (European Affairs, Political Science, International Relations) and your strong interest in sport have enabled you to develop a solid understanding of contemporary social challenges.

You are fully comfortable working in English on a daily basis—both written and spoken, in formal and informal contexts.
